UN: TURKMENISTAN HAS ONE OF THE LOWEST RATIO OF MATERNAL MORTALITY

According to the UN statistics, Turkmenistan has become one of the best countries in the world in mother and child welfare. Thus, according to UN reports published last year, the maternal mortality rate in our country is one of the lowest in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The protection of motherhood and childhood is prioritized by the socially oriented state policy, within the framework of which dozens of projects and programmes of national and regional significance have been implemented.

Most of them are aimed at the further development and improvement of the healthcare system, strengthening its legislative base, implementing unprecedented measures with the aim to support a family, stimulate the rise in births, and improve the quality of life of Turkmen citizens.

Due to the state support, modern medical and health-improving facilities were erected in the Turkmen capital and regions of the country.

In accordance with the WHO recommendations, national programmes are successfully implemented in this direction, in particular, on breastfeeding and the fight against anemia, which have been highly evaluated by international structures.

Implementing the strategy on reduction in the burden of disease among the population, Turkmenistan is completely or partially free from many diseases that are common in the region. Thanks to the immunization of the population, a number of infectious diseases, including dracunculiasis, polio, malaria, measles and rubella, have been eradicated in our country. The successes achieved are confirmed by international certificates.

The steps taken to reorient healthcare industry to significantly strengthen preventive work - timely diagnosis and, accordingly, treatment of various diseases were of great importance for reproductive health and reducing maternal mortality. Moreover, all necessary conditions are created for popularization of a healthy lifestyle, physical education and sports.

Particular attention is paid to strengthening the social status of family, the role of women in the education of the younger generation, and the promotion of traditional family values.

The prohibition of the dismissal, night and overtime work of women expecting a child, the provision of easier work for them and mothers of young children, including flexible hours and part-time work, established by the labor legislation, as well as other legal guarantees provide social protection for such families and allow working mothers to pay significant time for raising children. Mothers with many children, who are awarded the honorary title “Ene Myahri” also enjoy privileges.
