DASHOGUZ VELAYAT HAS GROWN SECOND CROP OF POTATOES THIS YEAR
The potato harvest is well underway now in the north of the country. This autumn, potato tubers were planted in large fields of 1,100 hectares for the first time in the Dashoguz region. Growers had selected the areas most suitable for potato cultivation in the region’s three etraps and varieties well adapted to the local soil and climatic conditions. Although the region’s farmers have considerable experience in growing spring-planted potatoes, it is not so easy to grow and harvest a second crop in the same year given local weather conditions. Throughout the growing season, growers have to carry out all necessary agricultural operations to ensure timely planting, handling and harvesting of the crops.
Although the harvest season is still in progress, it is safe to say that the local producers have gained valuable practical experience in growing second-crop potatoes. This will allow them to increase the production and enhance their skills in the future. For instance, in S. A. Niyazov etrap, where potatoes were planted on 300 hectares of farmland this autumn, farmers of Nowbahor Daikhan Association have already harvested 109 tons of the crops. N. Andalyp and Şawat Daikhan Associations in Gurbansoltan-eje etrap have already harvested 225 tons of potatoes from their fields.
The autumn crops will be a significant addition to the high potato yield of 56 tons produced in the region in the summer. This eloquently testifies to the fact that thanks to the all-round support and assistance farmers receive from the state the country’s agricultural production has increased, contributing to its food abundance and security.
