Turkmenistan and IRENA Strengthen Renewable Energy Cooperation

On 17 September 2024, the Turkmenistan delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Energy Nurmammet Nurmammedov, met with the International Renewable Energy Agency’s Director-General Francesco La Camera during the World Utilities Congress in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Key points of cooperation were discussed, with Turkmenistan outlining its renewable energy goals for 2025-2030 and reaffirming its commitment to IRENA and the global renewable energy sector.

Discussions focused on joint renewable energy projects, technical assistance, and Turkmenistan’s 2025-2030 International Cooperation Plan. IRENA's Director-General expressed readiness to support Turkmenistan’s renewable energy ambition in NDC 3.0. La Camera also informed that an investment forum on renewable energy development, organized by IRENA, is planned to be held during the 29th session of COP-29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November-December 2024. He invited Turkmenistan to participate and mentioned that an official invitation letter would be sent.

The meeting highlighted IRENA's plan to organize a future event for renewable energy development in Central Asian countries, requesting Turkmenistan’s active participation. They also explored the potential for a high-level visit by IRENA’s leadership to Turkmenistan to assess renewable energy prospects and engage with national authorities. The collaboration aims to leverage IRENA’s expertise, implement best practices, and discuss future cooperation, emphasizing long-term partnership and Turkmenistan’s role in regional renewable energy initiatives.

Mr. La Camera mentioned the possibility of visiting Turkmenistan in early 2025 and expressed support for enhancing financial mechanisms for the country's renewable energy projects. Additionally, the Turkmenistan delegation showed interest in IRENA’s assistance in training specialists for renewable energy development.
